The purpose of Peer Support Specialist serves as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to youth and their families to improve child and family functioning.  Additionally, a Peer Support Specialist supports mental health management and substance use recovery to help promote long-term quality of life.  The Peer Support Specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences and develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships.

An evidenced-based service model with proven results is used by the program. New associates received training, mentoring, and coaching throughout the onboarding process.

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:    High School Diploma or GED AND must be currently certified through the Florida Certification Board as a Peer OR must be able to obtain a Peer certification within one hundred eighty (180) days of employment as a condition of continued employment. Applicant must be able to pass an Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) Medicaid and Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) Level II background check, Tuberculosis (TB) test, and a drug screening. Applicant must also have a valid Florida Driver License with no more than three (3) points on their driving record.

JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: The job responsibilities of a Peer Support Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  1. Helps families explore interests and develop positive life experiences while providing emotional support and guidance toward healthy decision-making.
  2. Encourages positive peer relationships and healthy social outlets, while identifying opportunities to develop skills and achieve personal growth.
  3. Utilize tools to assist clients in creating their wellness and recovery plans.
  4. Uses ongoing individual and group sessions to teach clients how to identify and combat negative self-talk and how to identify and overcome fears by providing a forum that allows group members and peers to share their experiences. Encourages clients in the development of hope through the learning of strengths and combating negative self-talk.
  5. Models and reinforce responsible interpersonal and self-respecting behavior.
  6. Teaches and supports families to develop their plans and access their resources
  7. Encourages positive parenting, family interactions, and competence with family life skills management such as financial responsibility and homemaking skills, while encouraging mutual understanding.
  8. With other team members, provides support and education to family members to help them become knowledgeable about mental illness, collaborate in the treatment process, and assist in their family member’s progress.
  9. Helps families understand developmental readiness and utilizes teachable moments to surface important issues in helping clients and families reach their long-range vision.
  10. Teaches and supports families to develop their plans and access resources.
  11. Learns, models, teaches and coaches Conscious Discipline and Whole-brained strategies as a tool for parents and youth. 

WORK LOCATION:    Fort Walton Beach

WAGE:    The wage for this position is $16.00 per hour.
