The Legacy Award Presented by Daniel Cobbs, Bridgeway’s Chief Executive Officer, recognizes Dr. D’Amore for his 32 years of dedicated service to Bridgeway Center’s Crisis Stabilization Unit and Detoxification Unit. Among his numerous accomplishments, Dr. D’Amore assisted in the establishment of the Bridgeway Center’s Detoxification Unit and out-patient substance abuse services; coordinated the funding and construction of the Eglin Air Force Base Hospital; was on the founding board of Westwood Retirement Center; and served as the public health physician for the state of Florida. He was the first surgeon for the Army’s Provisional Parachute Group and for the 19th Bomb Group in World War II. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese in the Philipines and was part of the 65 mile Bataan Death March. During that march he saved numerous lives by trading personal items for medical supplies. The doctor served as hospital commander and chief of surgery and coordinated the establishment of several Air Force base hospitals before retiring from the Air Force in 1968. Daniel Cobbs in talking about Dr. D’Amore stated, “We feel honored that he is a friend and that we have had the opportunity to work with him.” The doctor retired from Bridgeway Center in 2006 at the age of 93, but continues to study the practice of medicine.
